To provide a fuel injection device for an internal combustion engine for coping with multiple kinds of fuel.
A diesel engine includes a main and an auxiliary fuel system. The main fuel system supplies and injects fuel by a mechanical fuel injection pump 50. The auxiliary fuel system injects high pressure fuel accumulated in a common rail 60. The fuel supplied by the auxiliary fuel system is injected at a high pressure from the beginning of injection and fuel particles are atomized. When the main and auxiliary fuel are the same kind of fuel, atomization of particles is as well advantageous for ignitability. When fuel of bad ignitability is used as the main fuel, fuel of good ignitability is used as the auxiliary fuel, and the main fuel is burned with the auxiliary fuel used as a source of fire.
