PURPOSE: To provide fine fuel control at high responsiveness for a fuel injection device in which the fuel injection timing and fuel quantity are controlled by operating a control valve disposed in a fuel circuit by a solenoid valve mechanism by providing the solenoid valve with a drive member comprising an ultra- magnetostrictive material.
CONSTITUTION: In a metering process for a fuel injection device, an ultra- magnetostrictive member 41 of a solenoid 40 is contracted where the solenoid 40 for a drive member is not magnetized, and a spool 31 moves right by a spring 34 to close a hole 35 by a land 32 and opens a drain hole 36 by a land 33. A pressure chamber 3 is thus connected with a drain circuit 52 through a passage 16, a spool chamber 30, and a drain hole 36, a piston 2 and a plunger 4 are moved up by a spring 10, and fuel in a drain passage 12 pushes a check valve 13 to be sucked into a pressure chamber 5. The solenoid 40 is then magnetized to elongate the ultra-magnetostrictive member 41, the spool 31 is displaced through a lever 42, and the holes 35, 36 are closed to meter fuel.
