To obtain a high-quality fuel oil base material, for example, a gasoline base material, a kerosene base material or a gas oil base material by catalytically treating a light olefin formed in petroleum refining with a specific alumina catalyst carrying sulfate radical.
Alumina is brought into contact with aqueous sulfuric acid or aqueous ammonium sulfate, then fired at 400-600°C whereby sulfate radicals are carried on alumina to prepare an alumina catalyst carrying sulfate radical. An olefin-containing hydrocarbon containing light olefins of 3-6 carbon atoms is brought into contact with the alumina catalyst at 30-70°C, preferably at a contact pressure of 20-70kg/cm2 G and a space velocity (LHSV) of 0.1-10hr1 to give a gasoline base material, a kerosene base material with a Saybolt chromaticity and a gas oil material of ≥60 cetane number.
