To provide a discharge rate variable fuel pump for an internal combustion engine in which its starting property is improved by increasing a fuel discharge rate at a low rotation such as start-up to obtain a required fuel pressure.
This fuel pump for an internal combustion engine, which pumps a fuel by the lifting motion of a plunger utilizing a cam action, has a means for changing the lifting amount of the plunger 102. The means includes a cam 203, the projection height of which changes along the axial direction of a camshaft 204, and a means for moving the cam along the same direction. By moving the cam 203 along such a direction, the lifting amount of the plunger is changed, and also by changing the discharge rate per one stroke of the plunger, the fuel discharge rate can be controlled without being determined only by an engine revolution. Therefore, even at the low rotation such as engine start-up, the fuel discharge rate can be increased to improve the start-up.
