To allow a television receiver adopting the television system of a different image scanning system such as the NTSC and the PAL system to monitor an image picked up at an image pickup device incorporating a full pixel read CCD image pickup element whose pixel number is more than that of the XGA standards.
An image read control section 9 applies a charge transfer pulse V11 to a read transfer electrode of a group of photodiodes 51 to allow a vertical transfer CCD 8 to read signal charges of the group of photodiodes 51 (256 pixels at an interval of two among 768 pixels arranged in the vertical direction in the image pickup element) so as to form an image, where the number of horizontal lines is 256 that is 1/3 of 768 lines of the image of one frame in accordance with the XGA standard. Thus, the one image is used for one field and interlaced for each 1/60 second so as to form an image pattern of one frame consisting of 512 horizontal lines thereby allowing the NTSC system television receiver to display the image pattern.
