The fume hood is provided with a vertical sliding type opening and closing door 3 on a front face opening 21 of a hood body 2. The fume hood is composed of a door driving means for driving the opening and closing door 3 in a lowering direction, a forced lowering means for driving the door driving means to forcibly lower the opening and closing door 3 when there is no operator in a periphery in an opened state of the opening and closing door 3, an obstacle detecting means 7 composed of a photoelectric switch provided on a lower end of the opening and closing door 3 for detecting an obstacle X placed in a lowering destination during forced lowering of the opening and closing door 3, and an emergency stopping means for stopping driving of the door driving means to carry out emergency stop of the opening and closing door 3 when an obstacle X is detected on the basis of information from the obstacle detecting means 7 during forced lowering of the opening and closing door 3.
