PURPOSE: To enable tapping of a molten metal subjected to degassing and killing at all times by providing approximately horizontally a partition plate which partitions the inside of a furnace for holding the molten metal for casting to upper and lower parts and has the area smaller than the cross sectional area of the furnace inside.
CONSTITUTION: A partition plate 5 is approximately horizontally provided in a holding furnace body 1 of the type which receives a molten metal 8 from above and taps preferentially the molten metal accumulating in the lower part, in the position approximately half the height of the body 1. The plate 5 is made into the sectional area smaller than the cross sectional area in the body 1 to provide a space from the inside wall of the body 1. A flange 5a is preferably provided to the peripheral edge of the plate 5. The disturbance in the molten metal 8 as a result of receiving is not transmitted to the lower molten metal 13 according to such construction. Gas 12 is diluted by the remaining molten metal and dissipates spontaneously as time passes by. Tapping of the molten metal subjected to degassing and killing is thus made possible at all times and an improvement in productivity is attained from the reduced processing time for the molten metal 8.
