PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally control various types of operation devices by transmitting function information expressing the function of a game machine operation device based on a command from a game machine main body, retrieving the function of the operation device, and setting the retrieved function to the game machine operation device. SOLUTION: A game system GS is constituted of a game machine main body 27, a game machine operation device (controller) 10, and a monitor 33. The game machine main body 27 has a CD-ROM driver for regenerating the CD-ROM incorporated therein and connects a connector 20 of the controller 10 to a connecting part 32 so that the bidirectional communications between the game machine and the main body 27 can be possible. In this case, function information expressing various types of functions stored in the controller 10 beforehand is transmitted by the command from the game machine main body 27 so that the function of the controller 10 necessary for the game machine main body 27 is retrieved. The retrieved function is set to the controller 10 so that the game is proceeded.
