To provide a garbage treating apparatus improved in efficiency of decomposition by stirring, in the initial stage of decomposition, garbage in the direction to send out the residue of decomposed garbage to a drying vessel.

The garbage treating apparatus includes a stirring means 56 provided in a decomposition vessel 2a and a drying vessel 26. The stirring means 56 stirs charged garbage, a microbe carrier 40, and residue of decomposed garbage. A control device 22 is installed for controlling the operation of the stirring means 56 in the forward and reverse directions. In the forward driving (in the X direction), the stirring means 56 is rotated forward, that is, in the direction for easily sending out the decomposed residue contained in the vessel 2a into the drying vessel 2b. In the reverse driving (in the Y direction), the stirring means 56 is reversed. When garbage is dropped in a charging port, the control device 22 starts stirring in the forward driving, and then after a 1st predetermined time T1, the control device 22 makes a change from the forward to reverse driving. Thus, the garbage-decomposition efficiency is improved.
