In a garbage treatment apparatus in which garbage is charged into a treatment tank for housing aerobic microorganisms and the culture base material of the microorganisms to be fermentation-decomposed by the microorganisms, peat moss is used as the culture base material 7, and an agitation means 8 for agitating the contents in the treatment tank 2, ventilation means 22, 23, 25 which discharge gas in the tank 2 outside and introduce fresh air into the tank 2 from the outside, and a heat retaining means for keeping the inside of the tank 2 at a temperature suitable for the fermentation treatment of garbage are installed.
