Abstract:

PURPOSE: To facilitate the activating treatment of the title alloy and to extend the range of its utilization by adding Cu to a Zr-V-Fe alloy and specifying its compsn.

CONSTITUTION: The gas absorbing alloy contains, by weight, 10-55% V, 0.5-15% Fe, 0.5-40% Cu(where the total of V+Fe+Cu is regulated to ≤60%) and the balance Zr. In the alloy, a fault is generated on a surface poisoning layer to easily expose a fresh alloy surface and to facilitate its activating treatment. In the alloy, Cu deposits a Zr2Cu intermetallic compound into the alloy and forms a fault on the boundary of a mother phase and a Zr2Cu phase in the poisoning layer on the surface of the alloy; and the diffusion of an H2 gas or the like caused by the fault has the work of facilitating its activating treatment. ≥0.5% Cu is needed to obtain the above effect, but in the case of >10%, the gas absorbing amt. is reduced.
