To provide a gas barrier coating agent which is used for producing a film having excellent gas barrier properties.
The gas barrier coating agent comprises adding a methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer to a high nitrile copolymer latex. The high nitrile copolymer latex is obtained by emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture of 100 pts.wt. in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol of 3-25 pts.wt. whose viscosity is 2-50 mPa.s and its degree of saponification is ≥95.5 mole %, the monomer mixture comprising 70-95 wt.% acrylonitrile and 30-5 wt.% of at least one of a vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith. An amount of adding the methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer is 10-100 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the monomer mixture. Polyvinyl alcohol of ≤40 pts.wt. whose viscosity is 2-50 mPa.s and its degree of saponification is ≥95.5 mole % may be added other than the methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer.
