Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a gas barrier coating composition that can be prepared using a convention apparatus and that provides exceptional oxygen barrier along with good laminate bond strength at high relative humidity when incorporated into an adhesively formed laminate, particularly a PET-PE laminate structure.SOLUTION: The process for preparing a gas barrier coating composition comprises mixing (i) a polymer composition comprising a solution or dispersion of PVOH copolymer and a solution or dispersion of polycarboxylic acid polymer with (ii) a dispersion of clay, wherein: the solution or dispersion of the polycarboxylic acid has a pH of about 4 or less; the clay is present in the amount of about 35-50 weight % of the total solid content of a gas barrier coating composition; the clay is dispersed using a high shear dispersion apparatus; the clay is dispersed completely; and the coating composition has a haze value of less than about 32%, when applied as a wet film weight of 24 gsm to polyester film and then dried.SELECTED DRAWING: None
