This invention relates to a composition comprising (A) a compound having two or more hydroxy groups in the molecule, (B) at least a polyvalent carboxylic acid selected from (b-1) an ethylene-maleic acid copolymer or (b-2) methyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer and (C) an alkaline compound, wherein the ratio in the mass of the compound (A) to the polyvalent carboxylic acid (B), (A)/(B) is 95/5-5/95, and a gas barrier composition is obtained by carrying out a coating or soaking treatment of hydrotalcite compounds (Y) to a composition (X) in which the compound (A) and a part of the polyvalent carboxylic acid (B) are crosslinked.
