PURPOSE: To provide a gas cooking appliance in which the energy conservation and the environmental improvement in a kitchen are conducted by avoiding waste gas combustion as much as possible.

CONSTITUTION: A gas cooking appliance 1 comprises a pot detecting sensor 31 for detecting whether a pot 3 exists on a grate 5 or not, an automatic switching valve 7 provided at a gas supply tube 15 to a burner 7, and a bypass tube 19 in which a gas flow rate is throttled to bypass the valve 17. Further, the appliance 1 comprises control means 35 for so controlling that the valve 17 is opened when the pot 3 exists on the grate 5 or closed when the pot 3 is not existed on the grate 5. When the pot 3 exists on the grate 5, the gas of the flow rate adjusted by a cook is supplied to the burner 7, while when no not 3 exists on the grate 5, the gas of the flow rate reduced to the minimum limit is supplied.
