The gas-fired cooking device including a gas-fired cooking zone 109a provided with a gas burner 127a, and a control device associated therewith, further includes an elongated plunger 135 to actuate a switch. The plunger is disposed in the vicinity of a corresponding gas-fired cooking zone, and longitudinally movable along an actuation path. A plunger bottom is movable along the actuation path by moving the entire plunger and changing a plunger length. The plunger is moved by a first amount of displacement (Hmech) along the actuation path by placing the cooking vessel, and moved by a second amount of displacement (Hthermal) along the actuation path by increase in length due to heating. The switch is operated when the plunger bottom is moved by both of the first amount of displacement and the second amount of displacement.
