Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain pyromellitic anhydride of high purity in high yield by a method wherein material such as rutile is used as a carrier, while oxide of vanadium or the like is used as a principal catalyst and manganese or the like is used as a promoter, and a 1, 2, 4, 5-tetraaklylbenzene is dehydrated and oxidized in gas phase under atmospheric pressure.
SOLUTION: A 1, 2, 4, 5-tetraalkylbenzene represented by the formula (wherein R1 is CH3, R2-R4 are each a 1-3C aklyl groups) is used as a raw material, and material such as rutile serves as a carrier, while oxide of vanadium or the like is used as a principal catalyst. A material represented by the formula: V-M1a-M11b-M111c-M1vdOx (wherein, V is vanadium, M11 is a material such as manganese, M111 is an element of group viii B, M1v is an alkali metal, or the like, (a)-(d) are each a predetermined numerical value, and X is an integer 7-10) is used as a promoter. In the presence of such a catalyst, the tetraaklylbenzene is processed at a temperature 300-450°C using a gaseous oxidizing agent to effect a dehydrating reaction and oxidizing reaction.
