To reduce problems on generation of NOx and an increase in combustion noise by suppressing a sudden rise in cylinder temperature or cylinder pressure in a short time during self-ignition combustion while ensuring stable self-ignitability of fuel in an HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) gasoline engine.
In the vicinity of an exhaust top dead center, negative overlap is performed. In an intake stroke, diluent mixed gas G3 composed of fresh air, fuel and external EGR gas is introduced into a cylinder 13 separately from normal mixed gas G2 composed of fresh air and fuel. A first area R1 having the amount of burnt gas G1 larger than that of any other gas G2, G3, a second area R2 brought into contact with the first area R1 and having the amount of diluent mixed gas G3 larger than that of any other gas G1, G2, and a third area R3 brought into contact with the second area R2, not brought into contact with the first area R1, and having the amount of normal mixed gas G2 larger than that of any other gas G1, R3, are generated in the cylinder 13 before fuel is self-ignited in the vicinity of a compression top dead center.
