To obtain a comb polymer useful for producing a soft material exhibiting heat resistance and high-damping performances by extending with an oil or a low-molecular-weight component by reacting a specified amount of a poly(alkenylbenzene-co-maleimide) with a specified amount of a maleated polyalkylene and a specified amount of a diamine in a solvent.
About 50 to 99 wt.% poly(alkenylbenzene-co-maleimide), about 1 to 50 wt.% maleated polyalkylene, particularly, maleated polypropylene, and about 0.1 to 10 wt.% diamine are reacted with each other in a solvent under conditions favorable for producing a polyalkylene-joined poly(alkenylbenzene-co- maleimide) comb polymer. The poly(alkenylbenzene-co-maleimide) is obtained by reacting a poly[alkenylbenzene-co-maleic anhydride], desirably, poly(styrene- co-maleic anhydride) at about 100 to 150°C in the presence of a primary amine and a solvent.
