To provide a glass base material in which the shape of the edge part constituted of a main surface and an end surface is not sharp and which has strong mechanical strength.
The glass base material is obtained by forming a resist pattern having such a polymerization degree gradient in the thickness direction that the polymerization degree becomes smallest on the main surface side on each main surface of a plate-like glass substrate, and then cutting the glass substrate into a desired shape by etching the glass substrate by using an etchant capable of etching the glass substrate so that the edge part constituted by each main surface and an edge surface is brought into such an edge that the whole layers are not cut by a sharp edge test based on UL-1439.
