PURPOSE: To stabilize reproduction of an image and thereby improve image quality by limiting the number of places where adjoining half-tone dots which are difficult to reproduce accurately come into contact with each other to at most, two per halftone dot at each gradation level.
CONSTITUTION: An image is subdivided into a minute area of pixels, the pixel is further subdivided into a more minute area of micropixels, a halftone dots(P0WP18) are formed using the micropixels colored in the previous pixel, and a gradation is displayed according to the percentage of the colored micropixels to the total micropixels. A halftone dot is always formed by a single group of connected micropixels and the colored micropixels are decided in response to each gradation. When each gradation level is displayed, the colored micropixels are to be decided so that the number of places where adjoining halftone dots come into contact with each other is limited to at most, two per halftone dot. Consequently, the stable reproduction of an image is assured by the reduced proportion of halftone dots whose reproducibility is unstable.
