To obtain a graft copolymer suitable for use in a coating material, excellent in weatherability, staining resistance, workability in coating, initial gloss, pigment dispersibility, water resistance, chemical resistance, etc., by polymerizing a monomer containing a specified ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a fluoro resin having a double bond through an ester bond.
A hydroxy flouro copolymer having a hydroxyl value of 0.57-250, desirably 3-120 and a fluorine content of 1-60 wt.% is reacted with an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid (anhydride) to obtain a fluoro resin having 0.001-0.055 mol, per 100 g of the resin, of double bonds through ester bonds. A monomer mixture comprising 0.01-20 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the formula (wherein R1 is H or methyl; R2 is a monovalent organic group; and (m) is 1 or greater) and 0-89.99 wt.% other ethylenically unsaturated monomers is polymerized at 50-200°C for 1-10 hr in the presence of 10-90 wt.% the obtained fluoro resin.
