PURPOSE: To obtain the captioned polymer wherein a polyvinyl chloride or the like has been grafted with isobutylene or the like using an inexpensive catalyst by polymerizing a cationically polymerizable monomer in the presence of an initiation system of a polymer having Cl bonded to secondary carbon and tin tetrachloride or the like.
CONSTITUTION: A cationically polymerizable monomer is (co)polymerized in a polar halogenated solvent, a nonpolar solvent, an aromatic solvent, or the like at -100 to 420°C in the presence of an initiation system whose first component is a 5C or higher polymer or oligomer having one or more chlorine atoms bonded to secondary carbon atoms or a low-molecular alkyl halogenated product and/or a 4C or higher polymer or oligomer having one or more tertiary carbon atom-halogen bonds or a low-molecular weight halogenated product and whose second component is a Lewis acid, such as a tin tetrachloride or iron tetrachloride and/or boron tetrachloride and their mixture, with the molar ratio thereof to the monomer being from 10-5 to 50, to obtain the intended graft copolymer.
