To obtain a graft polymer which has excellent emulsifier properties and is useful, e.g. for emulsification of fat in water by radically copolymerizing a macromonomer contg. a specified (meth)acryloyl in its end with a hydrophilic acrylic compd. in a specified solvent.
This graft polymer is obtd. by radically copolymerizing a macromonomer (A) comprising repeating units of an 8-30C alkyl methacrylate having a (meth)acryloyl end group with a hydrophilic radically polymerizable acrylic compd. (B) in a solvent (C) having a solubility of not less than 20 wt.% in water of 20°C. The component A is pref. a macromonomer, with an mol.wt. of 500 to 100,000 g/mol, represented by the formula (wherein R represents H or methyl; X represents a divalent group; and R1 represents a 8-30C alkyl). The component B is pref. acrylic acid. The component C is pref. 1-butoxy-2- propanol or the like.
