Abstract:

PURPOSE: To recognize that a determiner is inappropriately used in a noun phrase in a sentence by a system user by detecting the lack of the determiner of the noun phrase, the use of an unrequired determiner and noncoincidence for the determiner and the singular and plural forms of a center noun.

CONSTITUTION: A determiner correction unit 36 corrects the usage of the determiner for determining the indication object of the noun phrase. 'The,' '' and 'some,' etc., are the examples of the determiner. The unit 36 first tags a part of speech so as to specify the noun phrase in order to detect the unrequired determiner. Then, a part of speech string which fits to a prescribed pattern in a maximum length from the part of speech strings in the sentence i.s specified as the noun phrase. Then, the noun phrases are respectively tested and whether or not the determiner is lacking is detected. Finally, whether or not the determiner and the center noun of the noun phrase coincide for a number is investigated. Depending on the result, a word is inserted, deleted or exchanged as shown in the unit 38.
