Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a readily handleable granular material for controlling microorganisms, comprising a granulated material of titanium oxide and/or a fine silicon oxide powder having the surface treated with an antimicrobial specific compound, excellent in safety without eluting the antimicrobial agent to a surrounding environment and capable of sustaining the antimicrobial effects for a long period.
CONSTITUTION: This granulated material is obtained by coating the surface of a fine powder of a submicron titanium oxide and/or silicon oxide with an antimicrobial organosilicon compound, containing guanidyl group and capable of being immobilized thereon (e.g. a compound of formula I or II), then stirring the coated fine powder while heating the powder and thereby providing the granulated material comprising a granular material containing mutually bound fine powder and having several mm or above grain size on the average. The granulated material is used in order to impart antimicrobial activities to a material or a surrounding environment. The granulated material is an immobilized type antimicrobial agent capable of manifesting high binding properties to the titanium oxide or silicon oxide which is the substrate even if the antimicrobial agent is any kind of a silane compound or a polysiloxane in the granular material for controlling microorgasimsn. Since the binding of the antimicrobial agent to the substrate is extremely firm, elution to the periphery does not occur. The granular material has excellent persistence and durability of the antimicrobial effects and high safety in combination.
