To provide a granular microbial sludge generation method and apparatus which can easily generate granular microbial sludge.
The granular microbial sludge generation method comprises a treatment process for discharging aerobic microbial sludge G1 from a first reaction tank 3 into which organic wastewater flows and which accommodates the aerobic microbial sludge G1 while subjecting the organic wastewater to aerobic treatment, an agglomerated sludge generation process for aggregating the microbial sludge G1 discharged in the treatment process by agitation in a second reaction tank 7 to generate agglomerated microbial sludge G2 having a plurality of the microbial sludge G1, and a return process for returning the agglomerated microbial sludge G2 generated in the second reaction tank 7 to the first reaction tank 3. In the treatment process, microorganisms contained in the agglomerated microbial sludge G2 returned in the return process are allowed to grow in the first reaction tank 3 to form the granular microbial sludge, and at the same time to selectively discharge the microbial sludge G1.
