PURPOSE: To obviate a job for a grinding wheel's part, which is uncontacted with a strip, with a dresser by installing a mechanism which sets the same in a direction of rotation of both up and down griding wheels and drives a wheel's part being uncontacted with the strip into a direction where they rub with each other in time of rotation.
CONSTITUTION: Two grinding wheels 1 are set up as superposed on both sides of a strip 2. Accordingly, if rotational directions of both motors 17 and 18 for these up and down grinding wheels 1 is set to the same, both parts of these wheels 1, being uncontacted with the strip 2, rub with each other in time of rotation so that dressing for this uncontacted part with the strip 2 becomes unrequired. In addition, consumption in a diamond dresser can be economized and, what is more, the surface of a backup roll will in no case become damaged.
