PURPOSE: To facilitate linear grinding of an edge by grinding the main bevel and temporary edge of a knife using a grinding wheel set to a predetermined main-bevel angle (edge angle), then making a finishing grinding wheel abut the right and reverse sides of the edge for the grinding of micro bevels on the right and reverse sides of the edge.
CONSTITUTION: In grinding the edge of a veneer lathe knife 1, the long-sized knife is supposed to have a standard reverse side 14 and a main bevel 7 is ground at a predetermined angle to the standard reverse side 14 of the knife. Next, a right side micro bevel 12 is ground on the right side 11 of the edge at a predetermined right-side micro-bevel angle to the surface of the main bevel 7 (an irregularity or distortion then appears at a temporary edge 5b consisting of the micro-beveled surface on the right side of the edge and the reverse side of the knife). Next, a reverse side micro bevel 13 is similarly ground on the reverse side of the edge, and thus the knife is edged right along its longitudinal direction with the edge position set inside the intersection of the standard reverse side 14 of the knife and the surface of the main bevel 7.
