To prevent deterioration of quality by forming a groove having a section corresponding to the shape of an edge of workpiece on a grinding wheel by use of a forming grinding wheel, then grinding the edge into a required shape, and reforming the groove by the forming grinding wheel with the grinding wheel left as it is.
A work head 24 mounted with a workpiece 36 is led to the direction of arrow 60, then the workpiece 36 is engaged with one slot of an annular groove 34 engaging with an edge of the workpiece 36, and after a housing 72 is closed with a cover 76, the edge of workpiece 36 is ground. After the completion of grinding, the work head 24 is retracted to the direction opposite to the arrow 60 direction, and the finished workpiece 36 is removed. The housing 72 is closed without mounting the following workpiece 36 to the chuck 30, the work head 24 is moved axially so that the groove 34 engages with grinding wheels 56, 58 in order, and the formation of grinding wheel 34 is carried out. After the first grinding wheel formation, the second workpiece 36 is mounted, and the grinding is performed. Accordingly, it is possible to finish the outer diameter of disc with a high degree accurately and with a specified sectional shape.
