PURPOSE: To improve the detecting accuracy by detecting a travel of grindstone from a specified original position to a contact shoe, and calculating a diameter of the grindstone based on this travel.
CONSTITUTION: When a workpiece 22 is ground and cut by a grindstone 14, a contact shoe 31 is arranged in the direction of travel of the grindstone 14, and arranged so that a lower peripheral grinding surface of the grindstone 14 is brought into contact with it 31 in the midst of grinding and cutting process. A diameter L of the grindstone 14 can be detected by detecting the contact of the peripheral grinding surface of the grindstone 14 with the contact shoe 31 by a contact detector 30, and by detecting the angle of rotation of the grindstone 14 at this operation time by a rotary encoder 55. The distance N from a lowering-starting point 0 of the grindstone 14 to the contact shoe 31 is preset value, and the descending distance K of the grindstone 14 can be calculated based on the above angle of rotation, so that the diameter L of the grindstone 14 can be obtained by subtracting the distance K from the distance N. This method improves the detecting accuracy because the grindstone 14 directly contacts the contact shoe 31.
