PURPOSE: To process and harden a groove easily by arranging in a groove a pair of pressure members contacting only with the junction of the bottom and side walls of the groove to be processed and hardened and by inserting a pressing tool between the pressure members so as to give a relative movement.
CONSTITUTION: A circular groove 12 carved in a rotary shaft 11 is formed with the bottom and a pair of side walls 14, and a plurality of steel balls 16 are arranged as pressure members at an arc-like junction 15 where stress concentration is liable to occur. A disk-like pressing tool 19 with a tapered wedge-like cross section like a knife edge at the peripheral end is inserted among these steel balls 16 to press the steel balls 16 to the junction 15 respectively, then the rotary shaft 11 or pressing tool 19 is rotated so that they are relatively moved along the groove 12 to process and harden the junction 15 by squeezing it.
