To provide an approach towards forming grooves or other patterns on both belt and roll surfaces without machining using ribbon placement to create the grooves.

A method for manufacturing a roll cover for use on a roll used in the production of paper and paper products, the method includes the steps of: (a) providing a base structure on which the roll cover is formed; (b) placing a chemically reactive material on the base structure; and (c) depositing an elastomeric material onto the chemically reactive material which reacts and forms a bond therewith to create a pattern of grooves.
