Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent surface properties and electromagnetic conversion characteristics by providing a magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic support through a nonferromagnetic layer containing spherical ultrafine particle iron oxide and resin binder in a special weight ratio.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic recording medium comprises a nonferromagnetic layer and a magnetic layer having magnetic powder and resin binder formed on a nonmagnetic support. The nonferromagnetic layer contains spherical nonferromagnetic ultrafine particle iron oxide and resin binder of thermosetting resin. Thus, the iron oxide is used to provide high dispersibility to increase packing rate of the particles in the nonferromagnetic layer, thereby improving surface properties. A weight ratio of the iron oxide to the binder is set to 100/50-100/5 thereby to prevent deterioration of the surface properties of the magnetic layer by a wet-on-wet coating system, thereby preventing a decrease in adhesive properties of the coating film. Thus, the medium having excellent surface properties and electromagnetic conversion characteristics is obtained.
