Title:
GROUP 4B TRANSITION METAL-BASE METALLIC SPONGE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH0270034
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To make it possible to produce a sponge having a shape approximate to its final shape directly from a metallic sponge without requiring an arc welding stage, by substantially not incorporating halide into the metallic sponge and regulating its internal porosity.

CONSTITUTION: A group IVB transition metal-zinc alloy contg. <50ppm (weight) halide is subjected to evaporation to remove zinc from this alloy at about 500 to 1150°C to form the passivated group IVB transition metal-base metallic sponge having the internal porosity of 10 to 30vol.%. The transition metal is selected from among Ti, Hf and Zr. This metal-base sponge is metal having excellent in metallurgical applications. The low content of the halide is essential for the max. metal strength, toughness and durability. The high internal porosity and square granular shape enable the manufacture of defectless metallic parts by the powder metallurgical method.
