To provide a method for treating or preventing diseases and disorders caused by iron-dependent pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi and parasites) by applying a gallium compound to the affected region, especially a method for treating or preventing caries, vaginal infection and cutaneous infection.

The gallium compound can be formulated as toothpaste, mouthwash, cream, ointment, gel, solution, ophthalmic solution, suppository, etc. Also it can control growth of microorganisms on the environmental surfaces (surfaces of toothbrush, artificial tooth, orthodontic device of teeth, contact lens, catheter, food products, etc., are illustrated). Further animal foods containing the gallium compound for promoting growth of animals, and preventing the animals from infection are provided, thereby preventing consumers from post processing infection.
