To obtain a hair hardening-treating agent which does not affect the performance of a permanent cold wave-treating agent, has good stability, and gives an extremely good hardening effect to hair, when added to the permanent cold wave-treating agent, by including a specific ammonium salt and a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether.
This hair hardening-treating agent comprises (A) a quaternary ammonium salt of the formula (R1 is a 8-18C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; X is Br) and (B) a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether of the formula: R2-O-(CH2CH2O)nH [R2 is a 12-22C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; (n) is 5 to 10]. The hair hardening-treating agent preferably comprises the components A and B in amounts of 0.1 to 15 wt.% and 0.01 to 8 wt.%, respectively, in an A:B weight ratio of 1.6:1 to 3:1. The treating agent is added to a liquid containing a reducing agent and/or an oxidizing agent as a main component to obtain the cold wave-treating agent.
