To prepare a hair cosmetic which has rheologic characteristics that the hair cosmetic gives not only a touch feeling, when rinsed and after dried, but also a rich touch feeling due to a proper liquid viscosity, or the like, when contacted with a hand, and further that the hair cosmetic can easily be poured out from a bottle.
This hair-treating agent contains a higher fatty acid having hydroxyl group in a side chain in an amount of 0.01 to 10 wt.%. The hair- treating agent is the one wherein the higher fatty acid is 12-hydroxystearic acid. The hair-treating agent preferably additionally contains (A) 0.5 to 10 wt.% of a higher alcohol and (B) an amide amine derivative and/or a quaternary ammonium salt in a higher alcohol (A)/[amide amine derivative and/or quaternary ammonium salt (B)] molar ratio of 3 to 10. The hair-treating agent is a hair conditioner or a hair rinse which is to be washed out with water.
