Abstract:
A compound of the formula: wherein Ar is a phenyl group which may be substituted by certain radicals, R<1> is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or hydroxyalkyl (optionally substituted by halogen) or a phenyl or benzyl group which may be substituted by certain radicals, R<2> is hydrogen or a C1-4 alkyl group, R<3> is hydrogen a C1-4 alkyl group or a phenyl group which may be substituted by certain radicals and Y is -O- or -S-, is prepared by contacting, in the absence of an acid acceptor, an acyl halide of the general formula R'C=OX with an aniline substituted gamma-butyrolactone of the general formula: in the presence of a non-basic organic solvent and at a temperature in the range from 50 to 200 DEG C.
