PURPOSE: To prevent indentation remaining on the surface portion of a handrail by forming the surface portion of the handrail, which is brought into contact with a pressure roller of a handrail driving device when the operation of a passenger conveyer is stopped as a reinforced portion made by materiel having a hardness higher than that of the material of the other portion.

CONSTITUTION: A reinforced portion 15 is positioned in a portion which is brought into contact with a pressure roller 9 of a handrail driving device 7 in response to a normal operation stop signal of a passenger conveyer and is controlled by position detecting means and self hold means not shown. When the reinforced portion 15 is positioned in the portion brought into contact with the pressure roller 9 of the handrail driving device 7, the operation of the passenger conveyer is stopped. Thus, the reinforced portion 15 and the pressure roller 9 are brought into contact with each other, so that there remains no indentation 14 due to pressurization of the pressure roller 9 on a surface portion 3a of a handrail 3. Accordingly, the pressure roller 9 and the handrail 3 are always closely in contact with each other to keep uniform pressurization, so that smooth drive of the handrail 3 can be ensured.
