PURPOSE: To reduce the generation of misrecognition by displaying a stability index indicating similarity with a personal character dictionary pattern to the operator in case of additionally registering the pattern and deciding whether the operator registers a pattern or not.
CONSTITUTION: A personal character pattern to be registered is inputted to four frames (four patterns at maximum) in a character input area 4 on a tablet 2. An input stroke processing part 5 executes recognition processing in each input frame and stores respective processed results in a similar character buffer to find out the stability index indicating the degree of stability capable of recognizing said inputted character pattern. The user cancels or registers the inputted personal character pattern based on the information. At the time of selecting registration, the pattern is registered in the personal pattern dictionary and the registration is executed by a menu processing part 6. Consequently, a habitual character or an abbreviated character can be easily registered and a high recognition ratio can be obtained.
