Abstract:
PURPOSE: To improve the strength of a diamond coated member used for a cutting tool, a wear resistant tool, etc., and to improve the reliability under severe service conditions.
CONSTITUTION: In a member obtd. by coating a substrate with a layer contg. diamond and/or diamondlike hard carbon, one or more middle layers of a material having higher toughness than the coating layer and preferably having higher toughness than the substrate are inter-posed between the substrate and the coating layer. Thus, superior characteristics of diamond are exhibited.
