PURPOSE: To improve the cutting capacity of a cermet by using a cermet substrate in which the hardness on its surface layer part is higher than that on the inside as the substrate of a hard layer coated cermet.
CONSTITUTION: This is a hard cermet formed by coating the surface of a cermet substrate constituted of bonding phase forming components and hard dispersed layer forming components with a hard layer constituted of a plural layer of one or more kinds of Ti compounds and/or aluminum oxide, and as the cermet substrate, the one in which the hardness of its surface layer part is higher than that on the inside is used. In this way, the hard layer coated cermet showing excellent cutting capacity even in the case of uses for high speed cutting and intermittent cutting can be obtd.
