To efficiently absorb an impact caused at the time of collision by a headrest irrespective of the position and direction of the face of an occupant.
The face of the occupant is imaged by a CCD camera 10, and the image of the face obtained is recorded in an image memory 140. A CPU 170 detects the position and direction of the face from the image of the face recorded in the image memory 140. With an input from a collided object detection sensor 60 used as a trigger input, the CPU 170 calculates the moved amount and the amount of rotation of the headrest 200 from the position and direction of the face of the occupant relative to the headrest and the direction and speed of an object collided with the vehicle, and adjusts the position and angle of the headrest 200 by driving a motor 211.
