In the heat exchanger 1, a medium 6 absorbs heat from a high temperature gas 10 in the upper high temperature chamber 2, the medium 6 is introduced into a low temperature chamber 3 under the chamber 2 to transfer the heat to a low temperature gas 11 from the medium 6 and the medium 6 is then returned to the chamber 2. A dispersion plate 7 is provided in a communication pipe 4 extending from the chamber 2 into the chamber 3, and the plate 7 is vibrated and the gap between the plate 7 and the pipe 4 is made variable, whereby the amount of the medium passing through the pipe 4 can be adjusted so that the amount of the medium in both of the chambers 2, 3 is optimized to effect an optimum heat exchange.
