In the heat pump type water heater constituted by successively connecting a compressor 10, a water-refrigerant heat exchanger 20, a pressure reducer 30 and an evaporator 40 by refrigerant piping, the water-refrigerant heat exchanger 20 is a countercurrent type heat exchanger 20 where a refrigerant and the water flow oppositely to each other, and heat transfer performance of a part of 1/4-1/2 from a refrigerant inlet with respect to the total length of a heat transfer tube of the water-refrigerant heat exchanger 20 is higher than that of a remaining part.
