To extend the service life of a heat pump type water heater by elongating time until reaching nonboilable state caused by frequent high temperature abnormality or high pressure abnormality.
The heat pump type water heater includes a heat pump cycle 19 wherein a compressor 15, a refrigerant water heat exchanger 16, a decompression device 17 and an air heat exchanger 18 are annularly connected, a target boiling temperature setting means 14 for setting a target boiling temperature in accordance with use results of hot water, an abnormality detecting means 28 for detecting high temperature abnormality on high pressure side or high pressure abnormality of the heat pump cycle 19, and a control means 27 for controlling so that hot water from a hot water storage tank 2 is boiled to the target boiling temperature and the compressor 15 is once interrupted and then is restarted when the abnormality detecting means 28 detects abnormality. The target boiling temperature setting means 14 lowers the target boiling temperature when the abnormality detecting means 28 detects abnormality.
