To provide a heat pump water heater that enables improvement of reliability of a compressor and has excellent energy saving performance.
A heat pump water heater includes: a heat pump cycle 1 formed by interconnecting a compressor 4, a water refrigerant heat exchanger 5, decompression means 6 and an evaporator 7; a hot water storage tank 3 for storing hot water heated by the heat pump cycle 1; and hot water delivery temperature sensing means 42 for sensing a water temperature at an outlet of the water refrigerant heat exchanger 5. The heat pump water heater has: a hot water storage operation mode of storing hot water heated by the heat pump cycle 1 in the hot water storage tank 3; and a hot water filling operation mode of filling the hot water heated by the heat pump cycle 1 at least at a temperature lower than a target hot water delivery temperature in the hot water storage operation mode in a bathtub 31. Thermal capacity of the heat pump cycle 1 in the hot water filling operation mode is equal to or larger than that of the heat pump cycle 1 in the hot water storage operation mode.
