To provide a heat transfer printing device which facilitates control by software and makes it possible to improve a flexibility in device design.
The heat transfer printing device 1 comprises a conveying path 8 which conveys an ink ribbon 3 for heat transfer printing on which inks with different colors are applied so that the arrangement of a predetermined color may be repeated and a print medium (a card 2), and a thermal head 4 which presses the ink ribbon 3 to the print medium to perform heat transfer printing. The device comprises at least two or more sensors 51 and 52 which identify the colors of the inks by irradiating the ink ribbon 3 with light. The colors of the inks are identified by changing the sensitivity of each sensor and comparing a predetermined threshold value Vth with the output of each sensor.
