Abstract:

PURPOSE: To convert the high boiling point fraction of heavy oil into more valuable ligher fractions by passing a heavy oil having a low content of asphaltenic constituants together with a hydrogen containing gas stream through a specific catalyst under specific conditions.

CONSTITUTION: In the process, a heavy oil fraction is converted into lighter fractions, comprising passing a heavy oil fraction, having a low content of asphltenic, preferably less than 2 wt.% and a boiling point of 350 -520°C, together with a hydrogen containing gas stream through a reaction zone containing a non-acidic hydrogen activating catalyst, preferably consisting of Pd, Pt at a temperature of 400-500°C, preferably 410-530°C, and a hydrogen partial pressure of 10-60 bar, preferably 20-40 bar.
